As in, AD&D second edition, rather than 3rd edition D&D produced by Wizards of the Coast?

I play 3rd edition D&D. Pretty fun, and it's kept me in touch with friends from college whom I probably wouldn't see anymore otherwise.
Although the distances I have to drive to game sometimes are killers on my gasoline bills.

I tried to play some D&D, but I think my experience was somewhat dampened by the fact that all three of us were total noobs who hadn't much more than the first idea what they were doing and our DM insisted on making his own campaign and refused to try a pre-made one. IMHO, the campaign was kinda sucky, and at times more than a bit silly. I mean, come on! A drunken dragon? Where'd he get the booze from in the middle of a subterranean cave?

It does help if you've got some experienced players to play with.

I only know a few people who have really played before - one has sworn off the game and the rest are too old for me to play with.

And next year there's going to be a fourth edition of D&D. Silly WotC.

I have not played ADD for years. Before that I played it for about 15. (first edition then 2nd ed.) In fact the deities and demigods book was an issue that had the HP Lovecraft mythos in it, thats how old the books were when I started. There was about 9 in the group and I was 1 of the 3 core DM's. We played almost every weekend. We were liberal with many of the rules. (we bent or ignored them) The PC's went up in levels quickly. Treasure hordes were plentiful. Especially at the beginning. So we had inflation in our fantasy realm. And we got tired of skinning kobalds.
After about 5 years we developed our own fantasy realm on a massive planet. We had epic dungeons where sometimes small towns were wiped out, and that was just a warm up. In others we had games of political chess. (I wrote up a town with a detailed judicial system and government.) PC's ran for and were voted into office as reps for guilds (Adventure class as well as local unions for wheelwrights etc) Assassins made allot of money.
The main figure head (MY PC converted to NPC) Was a 23rd level Druid, among a few other things and he was OBSESSIVE about the balance of neutrality. Law and chaos and evil and good coexisted in the town equally. We liked intrigue and espionage (A major PC planted a bomb at the towns main shipyard, another hi level cleric decided that the cemetery needed to be livened up. ) It was basically the other 2 DM's trying to find a way to mess with my town, and they did. It goes on and on and on.. Eventually the town became a 135 page module (printed not written) with land maps and floor plans.
That was about 16 years ago. The group went our separate way. But when we do see each other someone always says "remember the time when...."
